Research and Development

To make sure we are offering our customers up do date skills we consider it essential to regularly attend seminars, demonstrations and also conduct our own research. CPD (Continuing Personal Development) points are required by the FRC (Farriers Registration Council) every year and we ensure these point requirements are exceeded.

There are also some exciting research projects being undertaken at Elite Farriery. These include:

  • A new Stud system: Studs have been the best solution available to us to add temporary grip. The current 3/8 BSW thread system was first patented nearly 100 years ago exactly! We have a patented system being trialled at the moment. The results of this are expected soon and we hope to be in a position to bring this to our customers. If you are interested please feel free to get in touch for more information.
  • An interesting project into 3D printing techniques that may help achieve gains for the competing Dressage and Showjumping horses. We are working on scanning, programming and producing shoes that allow far more flexibility in design compared to the steel and other materials we currently have. This system will probably not suit the everyday requirements of horses but has exciting potential for horses competing on deformable surfaces to allow us to fulfil every little requirement of the foot and limb.
  • Our lead farrier Tom is currently studying Equine Locomotion at the Royal Veterinary College. This is a two-year course. The results from the first module assessment have just been given and a Distinction was achieved.  The skills and knowledge gained through the course will help our customers achieve even more and to aid in the development of the projects above.
